Presenting the collection:
HELENAHelena—an artist, illustrator, painter, and graphic designer. A woman, mother, Austrian, and Slovenian. Yet, despite her significant contributions, she remains a largely forgotten figure in Slovenian history. Who was Helena? This collection delves into the life of Helena, the wife of architect Ivan Vurnik. Mysterious, unique, and reserved, Helena was a woman who, alongside her husband, created remarkable works that symbolized Slovenian identity through the use of national symbols and the Slovenian tricolor. She was a woman of the interwar period, who understood the challenges of solitude and the life of an artist. Originally from Vienna, Helena arrived in Radovljica adorned in rich skirts and blouses with ruffles. She later adapted to her new environment, even embracing trousers, and eventually moved with her family to Ljubljana. There, she found refuge in her studio, where she was free to be exactly who she wanted to be—Helena. In every woman lies a Helena, full of desires, passion, ideas, and a longing for independence—a mysterious figure. This collection draws on natural materials, the scent of Art Nouveau, golden hues, and textiles gathered from attics and flea markets, repurposed to breathe new life into them. Through these pieces, Helena invites you to rediscover your own life. MATERIALS: |
